With the expansion of peaceful use of atomic energy and radiation in the various applications in medicine, industry, agriculture, and other sectors, the need arose to a greater extent to be able to take maximum advantage of these technologies while observing radiation protection standards that will minimize the possibilities for accidents to occur, and if they do to minimize their resulting consequences.
Radiation protection is the task that seeks to protect all members of society-those that work in the field of radiation or others- from the danger of radiation, natural or man-made, as well as to protect the environment, and secure safety and protection from all radioactive sources, material or equipment, in all stages.
Radiation protection also involves the creation of suitable legislation and regulations that are consistent with international safety standards, and ensuring that these standards are implemented and monitored. Developing the appropriate radiation safety program infrastructure before the implementation of any program to utilize and benefit from atomic technologies in any of its form, is seen as the initial priority for any nation.
This conference is regarded as the first of its kind for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Member States, whose objectives are to exchange the latest findings amongst the members as well as review latest international developments in this field. A select group of international experts will present papers on the various aspects of radiation and protection.
